The
Idioms Workbook
Second Edition
Myra Shulman Auslin
This revision combines the first edition's seven workbooks into one
comprehensive manual. The Idioms Workbook can be used in either group
or individual settings. It is for use with school-aged children with
language disorders, students learning English as a second language,
and adults with cognitive impairments.
Each idiom is presented in
the context of a short paragraph accompanied by an illustration. This
presentation facilitates students' ability to learn idioms by abstracting
the meaning from the linguistic context. Five exercises also accompany
each idiom, covering its definition, its application, vocabulary development,
comprehension, and application of the idiom to the students' own experiences.
This engaging workbook comes with humorous illustrations, teaching suggestions,
and an answer key.
Idioms
Jocelyn Paris and Judy Paris
A great new addition to the
instruction of idioms, this workbook introduces a number of current
idiomatic expressions. It includes 24 idioms, each presented on two
pages. Idioms are grouped into six sets of four idioms. Each set includes
new idioms and a featured historic idiom.
The idioms are presented
with a story, literal and figurative meanings, a summary and exercises
to help assure comprehension. Each set has a review section that includes
a variety of comprehension questions for that set.
Stories and instruction are
presented at a high level, so this text is recommended for middle school
and higher.
Metaphor Magic
Katy Preston
This workbook introduces
metaphors through 36 worksheets that challenge students to interpret
metaphors as well as write their own metaphors. Worksheets include:
- A step-by-step process to help students determine what each metaphor
means,
- Drawing pictures
of literal and metaphoric interpretations of metaphors,
- Deciding what is being compared in the metaphor, and what are the
similarities,
- Choosing from multiple choice answers what the metaphor really means,
- Writing original metaphors and including them in short stories,
- More fun with metaphors to provide more practice in a fun way.
The workbook is recommended
for students from third grade through middle school.
Slangman
Guides
Davie Burke
The most common slang and
idiom expressions used every day by Americans.
Look at this example:
English taught in schools: "I dislike this. It is very difficult."
Real American English: "What a pain!"
Both mean the same thing, but "Real English" is the way Americans
speak. Students can learn slang and idioms naturally through dialogues,
pictures, quizzes, and games "in no time" (very quickly)!
